Travelling to Rwanda, Tresor and Soliel’s wedding, meeting Big Brian, Haruna and Paul

Sunday 10th August 2025

Dear friends,

It’s Friday afternoon and I’ve just arrived in Kigali, Rwanda for Tresor’s wedding tomorrow. Ian drove my car and we came with Mark and Elisha both from Kampala International Church who are all involved in the ceremony. Ian is officiating, Elisha leading the worship and Mark helping with all the organising of song sheets etc. I’m thankfully a guest. Mark and Elisha are both Congolese. We left Kampala early on Thursday morning and got to Kabale near the border where we stayed the night about 5 pm. It was much cooler there as the altitude is higher than in Kampala, and we were staying in rooms, which felt like climbing a mountain to me! I was so out of breath climbing up after supper that I got the giggles! We left about 8am to cross into Rwanda, the queues were quite long and although Ian got through on his East African passport easily, Mark only has a refugee passport and had to pay 50 US$ for a visa. Elisha and I didn’t have to pay anything, thankfully. We had a good journey and all was well. It is beautiful in Rwanda with lots of windy roads and hills and very clean compared to Uganda, our luggage was checked for plastic bags as these are not allowed! As we drove we saw tea plantations, bamboo growing and rice paddy fields, it looked very organised and lush.

I am staying at a different place to the others about 5 mins. walk away but we’ve met up for lunch and will meet again later for supper. (We went to an Ethiopian ‘restaurant’ and the food was very good.) I’ve spoken to Tresor and they have already had the civil wedding ceremony and some of the photos taken to save time tomorrow! There will be an introduction in the morning beginning about 9.30am followed by lunch, then the church service and reception. (It was a lovely day.)

Everything is fine with the boy’s. Peace and I visited Garuga on Wednesday afternoon. On our way we met Big Brian on his boda with Paul and Haruna, who we had not seen for a long while. They were all fine.

At George’s Place there had been a window broken by a football but this has now been fixed. Benard and the boys are trying a new regime on training Zimba, they are praising good behaviour and being firm with a ‘no’ and ignoring bad behaviour. It seems to be working as he managed to stay out of trouble for the whole time we were there.

The boy’s will all be going to football tomorrow, last week they competed in a schools tournament, certificate attached. Denis is continuing with his lessons on the sewing machine and seems to be doing well. He will hopefully be going for vocational training next year but as he is young we will look for somewhere nearby so that he can stay in the home.

Suzy, a teacher from the UK, whom I met at Victoria Mall a few years ago is staying with me for a couple of weeks, she arrived on Wednesday evening and hopefully is finding everything she needs in the apartment. I’m planning to return to the UK at the beginning of September, following the boys camp and a HoP celebration for Tresor and Soleil on the 30th August.

Thank you for all your loving kindness and support.

Love Jane x
