Talking with the boys, visiting Connect Africa, looking at a second-hand runaround car. Cooking banana pancakes
Sunday 14th July 2024
Dear friends,
Benard was back on Tuesday and Peace and I went to Garuga to talk with the boys when they returned from school. I think it was helpful. I am saddened that some of their teachers are checking on our website and referring to the boys as ‘street boys’ which is very unhelpful, some have been with us for a long time now and we know their families and the villages that they have come from.
On Wednesday we travelled to Connect Africa and visited Victor, Saviour (catering) and Sula (hairdressing), who are all doing well. We took them some food treats and supplies, such as bread, biscuits, flour, margarine, bathing soap, washing soap and an iron that they were asking for. Sula has had his hair braided by one of his colleagues, he hid this under a hat when we first arrived but whilst we were having a cup of tea with Lynn he came to talk with us and Peace advised that he should not arrive back at George’s Place with hair like that! Lynn, (from USA), the director was pleased with our boys progress but told them to be appreciative of all they receive as many of the students do not have such luxuries mid term. Lynn also introduced us to one of her students who is shortly joining university, hoping to become a doctor – he wants to be a surgeon which is so needed here. She is having difficulty getting sponsors and applying here for grants is not easy as they will probably be paying back for years and years! On our way back we called on Joyce in Ntinda for lunch as she has just opened a small cafe, she was looking well.
“Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. ‘Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am.’
Don’t run from suffering; embrace it.” Matthew 16:24 ‘The Message’
This week Jessie and Tresor went to look for a secondhand car to be used as a run around in Kampala, for shopping, taking boys to boarding school/clinic/hospital etc. I have sold my car in the U.K. and will use the money to buy one for Tresor to use here. They found one, a deposit has been put down and hopefully it can be collected next Tuesday.
Thursday morning Petra and I called at the bank as we are hoping to open a GBP account whereby we might get a better rate for transferring money. We then called at the KCCA (Kampala Capital City Authority) as more returns were needed to be filed, before returning to work. There seems to be more paperwork required on a weekly basis!
This Saturday morning I met with Tresor and Ian to start planning the camp, Tresor and I then travelled to George’s Place where the boys spent time making banana pancakes and enjoying craft activities. Halima, Benard and Patrick helped with cooking the pancakes made from ripe bananas, cassava flour and a few spices.
Thank you for all your love and support, even the younger boys seem to be growing up quickly.
Love Jane x
